Up for sale is this 60's USA made Kay Red Devil in good condition with a modern hard case.
Electronics
This guitar has had custom wound "Filtertron" style pickups installed. The pickup holes have not been enlarged or modified and the original mounting hardware was used for the new pickups so you could easily restore it to stock. Original pickups not included.
The new pickups sound great with that beautiful rock midrange that Filtertrons give you...it sounds like a Gretsch Duo-Jet! The original speedbump pickups are funky but known for being low powered and muddy.
Electronics were replaced; pots are modern split-shaft and it all works as it should.
Plastics
Original pickup switch with black bakelite knob. The white pickguard is a good quality replacement. Oxidation on chrome tops of control knobs.
Bridge
Original high quality Bigsby-style vibrato is smooth. The bridge is a Bigsby aluminum rocker style and the vibrato action is smooth and powerful.
Neck
Straight neck, low action, all notes play all the way up. Frets are good shape with very minor wear first few frets; nice rosewood fretboard, original knobs, nut, and strap hardware. Some small dings on back of neck that you can barely feel when playing. Finish crack in veneer around top neck screw on body. Some light neoprene guitar hanger rash on sides of headstock. Original single-line Kluson tuners work fine.
Body/Finish
The body is all figured maple, the neck looks like maple as well and it's all done up in a beautiful and distinctive transparent red finish. Finish checking all around body and neck as is expected for a lacquered instrument from this era. Minor fret wear first few frets. It bears many small signs of careful use through the years.
This guitar has a great look and great tone from both pickups. It comes in a good quality modern hard case that fits well and has all latches and the handle in good shape. A quality instrument that's been upgraded and set up right. These are still sleepers in this world of crazy vintage prices.
